I lulz New York!
Me in Grand Central with the photo my grandfather took of rhinos in Africa in 1971. I found it in his closet and asked if I could steal it. He said yes and I am so glad he did because it is now one of my favorite things. And it has so much lulz potential because it is such a very random object to have on one's person!
Happy new year to you all. I love you. My resolution is to stop worrying and love the bomb.
If you want to tell me your resolution I wouldn't be opposed to it.

Slides!
Last night my grandparents came over and we put a sheet over the television and they fired up their old projector! We watched three carousels of photos from their trips to Alaska, Africa, and the Colorado. They're coming again tonight with more photos.
It was so much fun to watch and it made me so sad to remember that these machines are basically extinct. You just can't match the color of those photos today.
Also lately I've been scanning my grandparents' old photos. I've learned a lot about my family and I will be able to post them soon. I've scanned over 200 images so far.

Aloha
I just watched the documentary, "Step Into Liquid" and I had a mini epiphany that I know I've had before and that isn't really entirely remarkable. But.
I've been existential crisis-ing a lot lately and I haven't been exactly sure why. I mean, it's a number of things, but the main one, or the overarching theme of the whole crisis, I know now, is a sense of directionless-ness. I watch this movie and no one in it seems to have that and it's because they've all got surfing. They have one thing that they want to do every day and that will make them happy no matter what. So that's what I want: passion as a guiding force.
I don't know if I've found it yet or I still have some more searching to do but I know that's the key to everything good in the world. And it's not too late, I'm sure. I'll find it.
NAUTICAL
One of the reasons I love coming to Florida is that we've got several wonderful nautical things in close proximity. My love of nautical things originated, I think, during my first viewing of The Life Aquatic, approximately two summers ago.
Since then I have personally acquired a captain's hat, a fake pipe, and a peacoat with anchor buttons that I like to think could belong to a captain. I value all of those things dearly, but the really good stuff is here in Florida, waiting most of the year for me to come back and appreciate them.
The Galileo Thermometer. It sits proudly in my room. Yes, I know it looks like a phallus, but, well, fuck you, it's awesome:
The magic conch. In a perfect world, I would be able to blow it and summon all the creatures of the sea to my aid. But, alas, we do not live in a perfect world. It's Caleb's actually, not mine.
This super awesome porthole-like clock hangs in my grandfather's workshop. I really really want it.
Something we've owned for a while that I only discovered recently is this ship in a bottle. By the way, ships are usually assembled outside the bottle then placed inside.
So those are all the nautical things currently in my life. Of course I would love some more, including a Breitling watch, a giant globe, a dive helmet, a giant telescope, a porthole, and an hourglass.
And I will get them all, eventually. Perhaps when I get my own ship and sail across the world. That will be the day.

Why is system of a down so scary?
Ever since fifth grade I have had a strange but undeniable fear of the band, System of Down.
Lately I have thought about why I feel this way and I have come up with the following reasons:
1. Beard braid. That's just about the nastiest thing in the world and at least one of the guys has one. Just look at it?
You're grossed out, right?
2. The guy with the tattoos is just fucking crazy. In the music video for Chop Suey he makes crazy eyes at the camera the whole time and it looks like he wants to eat me or something.
3. Vague ethnicity. You look at these guys and you really can't tell where they're from, but you know it's some place foreign and scary, like perhaps they're gypsies or wizards or something. But like bad gypsies and wizards.
4. Screaming then whispering in a song. Oh my god this is just Chop Suey in a nutshell. The most startling juxtaposition in music. WAKE UP (wake up)

So that's all I started this post at like 11 and now it's 3, good night!

Just saying
Blah blah IT'S SNOWING!
One thing I really miss about high school is snow days. You'd wake up and slowly you'd realize that it's not 6 in the morning but actually like 9 in the morning. Then you'd get out of bed and you'd open the curtain and you'd be like DAMN! and get the fuck onto AIM and look at five billion away messages that all read "OMGODZORS IT'S SNOWING I'M GONNA GO SLEEP FOR 18 MORE HOURS!!!" or something to that effect.
Then maybe you'd go outside in the snow but mostly you'd play video games and watch television and do your homework. But it was oh so leisurely.
I also miss when it would snow in the middle of the school day and one kid would be bored in class and suddenly scream "Blah blah IT'S SNOWING!" and everyone would look and the teacher would try to get everyone to concentrate but it wouldn't happen.
Then there's the days where you'd come into school and there would be some vague snow warning on the weather and everyone would start flipping out and rumors would spread like crazy about whether you'd be going home early. It would start about first period when some kid would say "Dude I heard we're going home sixth period we're getting two feet it's going to be a blizzard!" but then some other kid would be like, "We are NOT going home, the snow isn't going to start until 4 and it's only gonna be like 2 inches!" and so on and so forth.
And so on and so forth.

Voyager Message
From some article:
"The message is contained on a 30-centimeter (12-inch) gold-plated phonograph record. It contains a variety of sounds, 115 images, spoken greetings in 55 languages, printed messages from former President Jimmy Carter and then UN Secretary General, Kurt Waldheim, and a selection of music.
The sounds include wind, rain, surf, a chimpanzee, a Saturn 5 rocket, footsteps, a heartbeat, laughter, and a mother's kiss.
The images range from the structure of DNA to a diagram of continental drift and a violin with sheet music.
The record was assembled by a committee that was headed by the late astronomer, Carl Sagan."
Here's my mix tape for the universe, if you asked me instead of Carl Sagan. Of course it's all indie because it's on vinyl:

2. Feeling Yourself Disintegrate- Flaming Lips
3. Vito's Ordination Song- Sufjan Stevens
4. 7/4 Shoreline- Broken Social Scene
5. Track 2- Sigur Ros, from Untitled #1 Single
6. Do You Realize?- The Flaming Lips
7. re: stacks- Bon Iver
8. Hoppipolla- Sigur Ros
9. Wake Up- Arcade Fire
10. The Trapeze Swinger- Iron & Wine
11. Pitter Patter Goes My Heart- Broken Social Scene
